Building the kit
Start with the overhaul kit for your year range, 1999-2003 or 2004-2011. A 5-45RFE also needs the supplemental sealing kit, and an upgraded fiber oil pan gasket is optional. Choose a piston configuration: underdrive molded rubber and balance piston set, single underdrive bonded piston, or underdrive bonded retainer piston.
Add an oil filter for 2WD or 4WD vehicles and the external spin-on oil filter, which is replaced at every transmission oil change. Add a friction clutch plate kit from Exedy, Alto or Raybestos Powertrain, then a complete steel module and bushing and thrust washer kits as needed.

Finish with electronics for your year range (solenoid block, governor pressure sensor transducer, input/output speed sensors) and an ATSG manual or assembly lube.
