Fits: AODE / 4R70W (stamped steel drum)
Alto high-performance direct clutch PowerPack for the Ford AODE and 4R70W, for racing and heavy-duty applications. It builds an eight-friction direct clutch pack in the OE stamped steel (GROB) drum. Made in the USA by Alto Products Corp.
The stamped steel drum is also the replacement drum for AOD (non-electronic) units, because the cast iron drums for 1980 through 1990 AODs are no longer made.

Identifying the drum and installation
The factory used two drum setups with the same drum and piston dimensions: one with an original five friction plate capacity and one with six. They differ in the top backing plate. The five-plate setup uses a double-step top apply plate, .380 in thick at the outer step and .230 in at the inner step. The six-plate setup uses a flat backing plate, .220 in thick.
With either setup you build an eight-friction clutch pack. Install the eight friction plates and eight steel plates supplied, then the supplied top backing plate and the original backing plate snap ring. Air check the clutch pack several times to seat the components.
Check clearance with a feeler gauge between the top friction plate and the bottom of the backing plate. The recommended clearance is .025 in - .035 in, and in most cases it averages .030 in. Adjust it with one of the selective thickness snap rings Alto offers for this application.

Notes
NOTE: THE PARTS IN THIS KIT WILL NOT FIT THE AOD CAST IRON DRUM.
This stamped steel style drum is also used as a replacement part when ordering a NEW drum for AOD (nonelectronic) transmissions since the cast iron drums for 1980 through 1990 AOD’s are no longer being manufactured.
Install the top backing plate also furnished and the original top backing plate snap ring.Air check the clutch pack several times to seat all the components.
Using a feeler gauge, check the clutch clearance by measuring between the top friction plate and the bottom of the backing plate.
