4L60E Family Identification Guide (700R4 to 4L75E)
The 700R4, 4L60, 4L60E, 4L65E, 4L70E and 4L75E are one family of GM rear-wheel-drive four-speed overdrive automatics. They share the same basic layout and many parts, but the year breaks matter when you order. This guide shows how to tell them apart and which parts change between them.
The family at a glance
| Model | RPO code | Years | How it shifts | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 700R4 | MD8 | 1982–1993 | Hydraulic: governor plus throttle valve (TV) cable | TV cable, governor cover, electric lock-up solenoid only |
| 4L60 | MD8 | 1990–1993 | Hydraulic, same as the 700R4 | The 700R4 renamed in 1990; no real change |
| 4L60E | M30 | 1993 on (trucks), 1994 on (rear-drive cars) | Computer controlled (shift solenoids) | No TV cable, no governor, large wiring connector on the case |
| 4L65E | M32 | 2001 on | Computer controlled | Heavier-duty 4L60E: five-pinion planets and one more clutch in the 3-4 pack |
| 4L70E | M70 | Late 2000s | Computer controlled | Later version with an input speed sensor |
| 4L75E | – | – | Computer controlled | Call us with the tag details |
Gear ratios are the same across the 700R4 and 4L60E: 3.06 first, 1.63 second, 1.00 third, 0.70 overdrive and 2.29 reverse.
How to tell them apart on the vehicle
700R4 / 4L60 vs 4L60E and later
- TV cable. A 700R4 has a throttle valve cable running from the passenger side of the case up to the throttle. A 4L60E and later never have one.
- Governor cover. A 700R4 has a round governor cover on the driver side of the case. The 4L60E has no governor.
- Wiring. A 700R4 has only a small lock-up connector on the driver side. A 4L60E has a large multi-pin connector on the passenger side, above the pan rail.
Pan and filter
- The whole family uses a 16-bolt rectangular pan. A TH350 or TH400 pan has 13 bolts, and a 4L80E pan has 17.
- Our filter listings split at the pan style: 700R4 (1982–1993), 4L60E shallow pan (1993–1997) and 4L60E deep pan (1997–up). A 1997 can have either pan, so look at the pan before you order. Our 4L60E deep vs shallow filter guide shows the difference with photos.
- Both pan styles take the same 700R4/4L60E pan gasket.
Case and bellhousing
- Early 4L60E cases (1993 to about 1995) have the bellhousing cast in, like the 700R4.
- A bolt-on, removable bellhousing (two-piece case) came in from 1996, and most units had one by 1998. Bellhousings differ by application, so read the casting number on yours. See our cases and housings.
Input shaft and converter size
- The first 700R4s (1982–1984) used a 27-spline input shaft. A 30-spline shaft came in during 1984.
- From 1993 on, the input drum and shaft follow converter size: 245 mm 27-spline, 298 mm 30-spline with pilot, or 300 mm. Later 300 mm shafts carry a reluctor ring. Match the shaft to your converter, then check the year on the listing: 245 mm (1993–2005), 298 mm (1993–2002), 300 mm without reluctor (2000–June 2005), 300 mm with reluctor (2007–up).
Planets and the 3-4 clutch
- The 700R4 and 4L60E came with four-pinion planets. The 4L65E has five-pinion front and rear planets and one more clutch plate in the 3-4 pack. You can count the pinions once the unit is apart.
- The front planet and reaction shaft changed from a thrust-washer style (to 2000) to a bearing style (2001 to early 2006), then a lip-bearing style (late 2006 on). Order the style that matches yours: washer style, bearing style, lip-bearing style.

Many parts carry across the whole family, including the 2-4 band, the sun shell and most frictions. Each listing shows the years it fits.
Fluid
GM’s current service fluid is Dexron VI, which replaces the earlier Dexron III. A pan drop takes about 5 quarts, and a dry unit after overhaul takes about 11 quarts. The exact amount depends on pan depth and converter, so fill to the dipstick.
