Chrysler A727 TorqueFlite Transmission Guide: Years, ID & Parts

Chrysler A727 TorqueFlite (TF-8) 3-speed automatic | later called 36RH / 37RH

The A727 is Chrysler's heavy-duty 3-speed TorqueFlite. It went into production for 1962 and was used behind Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth rear-drive V8s, in Dodge trucks and vans, and in AMC, Jeep and International Harvester vehicles. In the early 1990s Chrysler renamed it the 36RH and 37RH. The design did not change with the name. Later, Chrysler added an overdrive unit to the A727 to make the A518 (46RH).

Use this page to confirm you have an A727 and not an A904, to work out which year group your parts come from, and to find the A727 parts we keep in stock.

Years and Applications

  • 1962 on: Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth rear-drive V8 cars, including the 383, 440 and 426 Hemi big blocks.

A727 or A904? How to Tell Them Apart

The A904 family (TF-6; A904/A998/A999, later 30RH/31RH/32RH) is the lighter-duty TorqueFlite. Many A904 and A727 parts look alike but do not interchange, so check which one you have before ordering.

Oil pan shapeIrregular outline with a bulge on one side. It is the same pan outline as the A518/A618.Nearly rectangular with one cut corner. It is the same pan outline as the A500.
Pan gasket we sellOEM # 2464324 (cork, Farpak or molded rubber)OEM # 4295875
Pan bolt countBoth have 14 pan bolts, so the bolt count will not tell you which one you have. Use the pan outline.
BellhousingBoth have the bellhousing cast into the case. Small-block Chrysler, big-block Chrysler and AMC/Jeep engines each need their own case, so a case from one engine family will not bolt to another.

If the pan looks like an A727 pan but the unit has a separate overdrive housing behind the main case, it is an A518 or A618. See our A518 / A618 / 48RE guide and the A500 vs A518/A618 pan, filter and solenoid guide.
