About the TF60SN
The TF60SN is a 6 speed, fully automatic, electronically controlled transaxle made and developed by Aisin Co., Ltd. Volkswagen engineers worked with Aisin on the version for their vehicles, designated 09G/09M. BMW calls it the 6F21WA in the Mini Cooper, and it is also used in Volkswagen and Audi vehicles.
Because it is used with many engine sizes, the number of friction plates, planetary ratios, intermediate ratios and final drive ratios varies with the torque load of each vehicle. The unit uses a gear ratio sensitive system that requires the correct transaxle interchange.
Some units have the heat exchanger attached to the transmission while others use a remote heat exchanger. This changes the case, case cover and valve body, and incorrect parts cause severe planetary failure. The manual covers these differences.
The transaxle uses a Lepelletier gear set arrangement: a simple planetary coupled with a Ravigneaux type planetary. This gives six forward speeds and reverse with only five clutch packs and one freewheel.
