(1) Aluminum ID tag bolted to the rear case half reads 242 (J = Jeep, D = Dodge variants) with an assembly number and 2.72:1 low range. (2) Shifter has 5 positions: 2WD, 4 Part-Time, 4 Full-Time, N, 4 Lo - an NP231 has only 2WD/4Hi/N/4Lo; this is the fastest way to tell 242 from the look-alike NP231 in the same Jeeps.
