Why the original fails
The original snap ring is thin, narrow and flimsy, and the groove in the case is only 0.050 in deep, so the ring has little support. Over time, flexing and bowing distort the ring, dish it outward and pop it out of the groove.
When that happens the retainer plate, waved crest-to-crest release spring and piston move out of position. The result is a no-move or slip/bind-up in reverse, along with damage to parts in the rear of the case. The K0108 ring is designed so it stays in place.
