Alto high-reverse (direct) clutch PowerPack for Ford A4LD, 4R44E, 5R44E, 4R55E and 5R55E transmissions, made in the USA. It adds one friction plate of capacity: an original 5 friction plate drum takes 6, and an original 6 friction plate drum takes 7, with no machine work to the drum, piston or top pressure plate.

What it fixes
The added capacity addresses 2-3 bang or cut-loose at light throttle, 2-3 slip or slide with a tail-end bump at moderate throttle, 2-3 bang at higher throttle, 3-2 kickdown bang, 3-2 slide with a tail-end bump, and abrupt reverse engagement when hot. It also gives shorter, cleaner high-throttle 2-3 shifts, smoother direct clutch apply and more torque holding in street performance or heavy-duty use.
The kit is designed for average applications such as the Aerostar or Ranger, and also improves durability and performance in the Mustang, Thunderbird, Bronco II and Explorer 4x4.
Identify the drum: the factory used a 5 friction plate drum from 1985 to late 1989 and moved the snap ring groove up for a 6 plate drum in 1990. A unit from 1985 to 1989 may already have a 1990 and up 6 plate drum. With the top snap ring held up in its groove, measure from the top of the snap ring to the top of the drum at the sun gear shell lug area: about .850 in for a 5 plate drum and about .725 in for a 6 plate drum, a .125 in (1/8 in) difference. A 6 plate drum is Ford part number F0TZ-7D044-C.
Stack 6 steels and 6 frictions in a 5 plate drum, or 7 and 7 in a 6 plate drum, ending with the top pressure plate. Air check the pack several times, then set clearance to .025 in - .035 in. The .068 in snap ring, factory installed in most drums Alto checked, usually achieves this. Otherwise use a different thickness snap ring, or swap a thin steel for a standard steel of .068 in (Alto 041707) or .078 in (Alto 041703). Presoak the frictions for at least fifteen minutes to prevent glazing on startup.

Notes
Using a vernier caliper, hold the snap ring firmly UP towards the TOP of the snap ring groove and measure the height between the TOP of the snap ring and the TOP of the clutch drum at the sun gear shell lug area.
An original five friction plate drum will measure approximately .850” while an original six plate drum will measure approximately .725”.
Air check the clutch pack several times to apply and seat all the components.
