About the 9T series
The 9T series was introduced for the 2017 model year in the Chevrolet Malibu with the 2.0 liter turbo engine and spread to other Chevrolet models, Buick and Cadillac. Like the 10 speed transmissions, the 9 speed was a collaboration between Ford and GM engineering, with Ford settling on an 8 speed version. The 9TXX name means 9 forward speeds, transversely mounted, with the last two digits giving torque capacity.
The 9T45/50/60/65 is fully automatic and electronically controlled. Its four element torque converter has a converter clutch that is commanded on after the 1-2 shift, and the TCM allows approximately 20 rpm of slip in second through sixth gears. Three planetary gear sets, seven multiple friction elements and a hydraulically controlled one-way clutch, which can lock one way and freewheel the other or lock in both directions, remove the need for a low-reverse clutch and give nine forward speeds and one reverse.
The oil pump is a remote axis, chain driven design. On vehicles with auto-stop, a solenoid operated high pressure accumulator gives instant throttle response while the engine restarts.
A dedicated Transmission Control Module, mounted on the valve body side cover, reads a variety of sensors and uses ten solenoids for shift timing, shift feel and converter clutch operation. Units with Auto-Stop have an eleventh solenoid for the accumulator. Manual shifting is available through Driver Shift Control (DSC) or the Electronic Transmission Range Selection (ETRS) system.
