When OE accumulator pistons in GM 8L45 and 8L90 transmissions leak, a common repair is reaming the bores and installing oversized aftermarket pistons. However, some aftermarket kits use steel pistons, and steel operating in an aluminum valve body can wear the bores out fast — much faster than the OE design. With excessive wear, the bore usually can’t be oversized again without risking the casting, so many shops end up replacing the entire valve body.
