Installation in 7 steps
Use a 1988 or later input drum, identified by its narrow snap ring groove and 0.093" 3-4 snap ring, and a 3-4 apply ring that measures 3.675" +/- 0.005" tall. This is the stamped steel Number 7 apply ring that rests on top of the 3-4 piston; it has a 7 stamped on it, and its OEM number is 8685043.
Pre-soak all friction plates in ATF. Install the special grooved apply plate first, groove facing up. Then alternate external spline and internal spline friction plates, friction material facing up (away from the apply plate), until seven of each are installed. Keep the narrow external spline plate printed "TOP" aside for the next step.
Install the special external spline plate, with the narrow band of friction material and the word "TOP" facing up, last in the pack. Load release springs are optional and are recommended above 5000 RPM.
Install the .145" pressure plate and the factory snap ring. Clearance should be 0.050"-0.070"; use the optional external spline shim to adjust it if needed. Check piston travel with a dial indicator on the backing plate while applying air to the third clutch feed. If you use feeler gauges, measure in two places 180 degrees apart at the same time for even loading of the pressure plate.

Notes
Do not attempt to install the narrow external spline friction plate, with "TOP" printed on it, into the machined groove.
This eternal spline plate does not look like any of the others.
If clearance is measured with feeler gauges, it is important to measure in two places at the same time, 180 degrees apart, for even loading of the pressure plate.
Raybestos Powertrain produces OE quality transmission friction bands that meet stringent quality standards required in today's complex transmissions.
Using it anywhere else in the pack will damage the clutch pack and void the warranty.

Z-PAX saves my business
I do a lot of tow haul with my 1500 truck. I cant afford to buy a larger 2500 series. The 4l60 e failed for the second time after a standard master rebuild. Again the 3-4 clutch pack and piston. I looked at changing to a standard xmission. Then i watched a video on the z pax. So decided to try it. I installed it and returned to hauling. I noticed an immediate change in the performance of the 4l60 e in tow haul mode. It pulled better shifted smoother and operated at lower rpm. Also in normal road travel mode the motor is operating at lower rpm saving gas and still providing power in its normal range. So i am sold on this product. It changes my 1500 to a sleeper 2500 tow haul truck..thanks ray bestos.
