Differential Backlash Inspection

  1. Install drive shafts on the differential, then place the axle on V-blocks
  2. Check backlash of the pinion gears with a dial indicator.
  3. If the backlash is out of spec, replace the differential carrier

Backlash Spec = 0.05 - 0.15 mm (0.002 - 0.006 in)
