Things to Consider
- 4L60E transmissions have been on the road for over 30 years now and out of manufacturing for over a decade. They have racked up billions of miles collectively and finding one under 100,000 miles isn't easy. Many of these units have been rebuilt multiple times, most at least once. This usage has undoubtedly caused visible wear in many components of the transmission and for sure some valve lines and valves.
- When rebuilding a transmission most places focus on fixing the existing wear, and the good shops will fix the notorious weak spots of a unit. Future wear doesn't usually get much consideration. 4L60E valve bodies have many common wear spots in several of the valve lines. Luckily Sonnax and TransGo have come up with many solutions for valve lines and valves that have started to wear.
- Many shift kits have stepped up to the plate to fix weak spots within the transmission and valve body assembly. Some better than others. Some are just designed to modify the functionality or "feel" of the transmission. No one shift kit addresses all of the problem areas or wear spots in the transmission. Shift kits almost always have components that aren't in the valve body.
Step 1
Choose which year range casing you need. Some casting numbers are interchangeable within their year range. Some castings are the same across year ranges. If the casting number on your valve body doesn't match what you receive, it is likely that the year range selected has multiple casting numbers that can be made to interchange. If you would like for OMS to remanufacture the valve body casting that came out of your transmission select "None" in the "Choose your casting" option. If you choose this option, one of the following methods must be selected in the next :
- Drop the casting off to our facility here.
- Have us ship you a valve body shipping kit (box, 2 InstaPak's) and return label ($40).
- You ship your valve body casting directly to us addressed to VB Reman #( your order number) to the address on this page (packaging well is extremely important to ensure the core gets to us undamaged and with intact solenoids).
If you choose for us to rebuild your valve body, we will do a vacuum test on the core when it comes in to verify it is a rebuildable core and determine if there are any valve lines that are damaged and need an oversized valve option. You will get a copy of the before and after test results with the remanufactured valve body.
Step 2
Select the upgrades you want to have done to your valve body. The individual valve line upgrade options are listed by manufacturer part number so if you need more information about that specific part you can see more details on the listing page for that individual part. If you are sending your core in to be rebuilt and aren't sure which upgrades or fixes you want or need and would like for us to test the core before deciding, check the "Check This Box" field in the "If you are sending in your core and want OMS to determine which fixes your VB needs" options set. We will perform a vacuum test on your core to determine if there is any wear or valve lines damaged that need reamed or an aftermarket solution to fix and bring it back into spec. We will then call you to discuss the results, formulate a build plan for the valve body, and get your approval before the rebuild starts.
Step 3
Choose a shift kit option. If you don't want a shift kit choose none. If you do select a shift kit, only the valve body portion of that shift kit will be installed in the valve body. Most shift kits will also include parts that need installed into other areas of the transmission. All remaining components of the shift kit will be sent with the valve body and will need to be installed in the transmission. If you are also getting a custom pump, we can install any pump components in the selected shift kit into your custom pump. Leave an order message, text our direct number, drop us an email, or give us a call to let us know this is what you want us to do. Many shift kits have selective spring options to dial in shift feel or change pressure in certain valve lines. We will need to know which you prefer in the field designated for the shift kit option you chose. The Sonnax 4L60E Sure Cure (SC-4L60E) Kit contains 3 valves that need reamed (TCC Regulator and AFL in the valve body, Pressure Regulator in the pump). This requires approximately $1000 in tooling to complete. If you want the SC-4L60E but don't want to buy the tools, and want us to ream all 3 valve lines for your build, choose the custom valve body for your year range and select the SC-4L60E (along with any other upgrades you may want), then add a "Ready to Install" 4L60E pump for the appropriate year to your order and we will do the PR valve ream for free.
Step 4
Fill out any shift kit specific details we may need to customize your build to your needs. Add the VB to your cart and check out. Then sit back and wait for your one of a kind valve body to show up and get your build on the road.
About the OMS Valve Body Rebuild Process
We acquire valve body cores through numerous channels: whole transmission core teardown and recovery, cores returned from customers who bought a valve body, transmission shops that have accumulated cores and want to offload them, and by the gaylord from reputable core recovery companies. When valve body cores come in they are inspected and scrutinized to ensure that they are worthy of being rebuilt and given a new life in someone else's vehicle. Any that don't make the cut are broken down for parts and recycled. If the core makes the cut to be rebuilt it is put through our rigorous, thorough rebuild process. A brief synapsis of the process:
- Casting is completely stripped of all valves, springs, electronics, plugs, and clips.
- All components are bathed in a hot ultrasonic tank with a proprietary blend of medical grade cleaning solutions.
- The casting is degreased then bathed in a hot ultrasonic tank.
- Once clean, all valves and springs are inspected for damage and wear. Damaged items are replaced.
- Once clean, the casting is scoped for valve line damage or wear with a multi angle high definition endoscope.
- Any worn valve lines are reamed for an oversized version of the valve. If one is not available, the casting is scrapped.
- All bore plugs and steel valves are polished and cleaned a final time by hand, and then lubricated. All anodized valves are cleaned by hand and lubricated.
- The casting is then honed on the separator plate side to ensure it is perfectly flat and can has a good sealing surface for gaskets.
- Each valve line is polished with Bench Buddies to ensure all valve land mating surfaces are in proper condition.
- The casting is then ultrasonically cleaned again, blown off with compressed air to ensure it's free of shavings and debris, and a final hand cleaning with a chlorinated solvent.
- The valve body is then fully assembled.
- The completed assembly is then vacuum tested to ensure all valve lines are within the Sonnax recommended specifications. If any component fails it is reworked until it passes testing. If it cannot be brought into spec then the casting is recycled.
Once completed and testing passed, the assembly is double bagged to prevent leakage during shipping. It is then boxed with 2 Instapak expanding foam inserts to lock the valve body in place in the box and prevent damage in shipping. All of this to ensure a high quality, undamaged, reliable product makes it to our customers so we can rest assured that when you buy a valve body from us, you will be satisfied with what you get.
